Treating Birth Defects

Prenatal care by a doctor is very important to help prevent and diagnose birth defects. Diagnosis of some birth defects can take place before birth, while others may not be identified until a child is older. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the birth defect. Depending on severity, many infants with birth defects undergo surgery in the first year of life. Some birth defects cannot be treated.

For more information about treatment options, see the types of birth defects section on our website.
